What is the best way to travel from nyc to dc?

my friend and I are traveling from vienna,austria to NY. were planning to visit DC and then head straight to chicago, then back to NY.anybody know what is the cheapest way to go,NY to DC then DC to chicago and chicago to NY. by plane or by train? would really appreciate help,this will be our first time in the US...thanks so much
